About Aikido Yobukai

The Aikido Yobukai was founded in 2016 by Jon Marshall Shihan, a renowned Aikido practitioner with 35 years of Martial Arts training, with 7 of those years spent living and training in Japan.

He has achieved the rare privilege of attaining the rank of Shihan in two different styles of Aikido – Yoshinkan Aikido and Gyokushin Ryu Aikido. He has worked tirelessly and devoted his life to the study and dissemination of both these styles.

The meaning of Yobukai translates to “an organisation that cultivates the martial way”. Our aim is to continue to practice, research and teach Aikido, with the objective of providing effective and viable methods and techniques that stay true to traditional budo, whilst applying these lessons beyond the dojo into modern daily life.

The Yoshinkan method of Aikido is taught to the Tokyo riot police and is well known for its combat effectiveness as well as the cultivation of strong spirit, and technical excellence.

The Gyokushin Ryu is a dynamic form of Aikido (sometimes referred to as Aiki Budo) that specialises in sutemi waza (sacrifice techniques) and groundwork in addition to more traditional Aiki techniques.

Both the Yoshinkan method and the Gyokushin Ryu method are seamlessly integrated and the students learn and are graded in both systems. This is achieved through a very well structured and systematic syllabus.

The Yobukai is unique in that it is one of the only schools of Aikido that incorporates Newaza or groundwork into its syllabus. There is a strong focus on technical excellence as well as self-defence and especially the transition from stand up to the ground. As the only affiliate of the legendary Jean Jacques Machado Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in Asia, students also have the opportunity to train and grade under this incredible lineage of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The students also have the opportunity to visit and train in Japan and Australia as well as training camps in Singapore, Asia, Australia, the United States and other parts of the world.
